When in doubt, treat the garment as more fragile than you assume. It's far easier to be cautious than to repair damage after the fact.
Water Temperature and Cycle Selection
Cold or lukewarm water is almost always the safer choice for delicates — heat is one of the fastest ways to shrink, distort, or weaken fine fibers. Pair this with a gentle or delicate cycle, which reduces agitation and spin speed to protect the fabric's structure.
For especially fragile pieces, hand-washing in a basin often gives you more control than any machine setting can.
Detergents and Additives to Avoid
Standard detergents are often too harsh for delicate fibers and can strip natural sheen from silk or cause wool to felt. A mild, pH-neutral detergent formulated for delicates is worth keeping on hand.
Skip bleach and fabric softener on delicates entirely — both can weaken fibers or leave residue that dulls the fabric's natural finish over time.
